SALT SPRING ISLAND, BCCBC News reports that employees at Saltspring Island Ales have voted to become the first unionized craft brewery workers in British Columbia.

According to the report, three full-time and five part-time staff at the brewery have voted in favour of joining the Brewery Winery & Distillery Workers Union Local 300, which represents workers from the province’s large breweries including Labatt, Molson and its Granville Island subsidiary, Sleeman-owned Okanagan Springs, and Pacific Western.

As part of a new collective agreement, the brewery has agreed to invest in more equipment and other improvements at the brewing facility, and will top up Medical Service Plan premiums for employees.
