SASKATOON, SK - Brewers Chloe Smith and Cédric Dauchot have recently incorporated Shiny Penny Brewery, with plans to open a brewpub in Saskatoon. It will be some time before the opening happens, though, so in the meantime, they’ve teamed up with Paddock Wood Brewing to release their first beer, Saskatchewan Wheat Ale:
This Belgian style witbeer (think Hoegaarden) is spiced with orange peel and coriander. Hazy by design, make sure to swirl the yeast in the bottom of the bottle for full effect before pouring into a glass to enjoy.
In addition to this “private label” release, Paddock Wood has two other seasonal beers available now:
Bramling Cross is a British style ordinary bitter with 4.5% ABV. It features a nice malt base of Maris Otter with layers of Bramling Cross hops. This UK hop has prairie roots as it is the result of the male hop Kent Goldings being crossed with a wild Manitoba female.
Named after the theatre located in London which featured the Bard’s plays, Blackfriars Ale is our take on what a brewer might have done in London in the 17th Century. It has several layers of variously toasted malts, British hops to balance, and 7.5% ABV.
All three beers are available now at the brewery retail outlet, and Blackfriars is also available at the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival.

CALGARY, AB – Wild Rose Brewery is preparing two limited edition brews for the coming months.
In August, they’ll be releasing the draught-only Wild Rose Saison as part of their regular seasonal beer program:
Reflect as the hazy orange hue catches the sun while the refreshing, crisp citrus character and a classic Saison dryness offer an unexpectedly smooth mouthfeel. Inhale the earthy, yet fruity aromatics influenced by the addition of ginger (Zingiber officinale) and grains of paradise (peppery seeds from the Aframomum melegueta plant). Linger over the dry, slightly tannic finish enhanced by the Belgian yeast and the spicy, citrusy character of Saaz and East Kent Goldings hops. A perfect summer ale.
Also coming is Royal 100, a beer being brewed to mark the 100th anniversary of Calgary’s Mount Royal University. More information on this beer will be announced soon.

CHAMBLY, QC – Following a preview at last month’s Mondial de la Bière festival in Montreal, Unibroue today officially launched their new beer, Blonde de Chambly.
As with most Unibroue beers, there’s a story behind the name and label:
Here is Unibroue’s own interpretation of traditional Belgian saison ale. Traditionally brewed to help field workers cool off on long summer days, saison ales were highly refreshing—even served warm in the days before refrigeration. Blonde de Chambly pays tribute to the Filles du Roy, the women who came to Nouvelle-France to marry soldiers of the Carignan-Salières Regiment, among others. They settled on the fertile lands defended by Captain Jacques de Chambly and gave birth to many of our ancestors.
Unibroue Blonde de Chambly is available now in Quebec, with distribution elsewhere in Canada to follow.
