Sherbrooke Liquor & Denmark’s Ugly Duck Brewing Partner on Limited Edition Beer to Promote Diplomacy

EDMONTON, AB – A week after releasing a new beer to mark the milestone of having more than 1000 brands on the shelves – the biggest selection of any shop in Canada – Edmonton’s Sherbrooke Liquor Store has another exclusive limited edition beer available, this one with a unique international twist.

Created especially for Sherbrooke by Denmark’s Ugly Duck Brewing, this new brew – a 10% abv Imperial coffee vanilla porter called Hans Across the Water – is meant as a light-hearted appeal for diplomacy between the governments of Canada and Denmark over Hans Island, a tiny and uninhabited island between Ellesmere Island and Greenland that both countries claim to own.

In an article in the National Post, Sherbrooke’s purchasing manager Jim Pettinger says: “Our intention is to invite both prime ministers to stop acting like bloody fools, sit down like men over beer and hammer this out. It can be solved very simply but when you get lawyers and diplomats involved nothing is simple. Even if our respective countries could not come to an agreement here, we could.”

The label for the beer features a parody of Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam, with God represented by Ugly Duck’s brewer Martin Jensen, pouring a beer for Pettinger, in place of Adam.

Hans Across the Water is a limited release of 960 1.5 litre bottles, retailing for $25.95 per bottle.
