Ontario Hop Growers’ Association Holding Hop Production Workshop This Weekend

WHITBY, ON – The Ontario Hop Growers’ Association (OHGA) will be presenting a Spring Hop Production Workshop on Saturday March 22nd at the Whitby Campus of Durham College (1610 Champlain Ave., Whitby, ON).

Aimed mainly at current and perspective hop farmers in Ontario, the agenda for the day will including the following:

HOPS 101: INTRODUCTION TO SMALL-SCALE HOPS FARMING
Lecturer – Julien Venne MSc. – Hops Agronomist
Selection of hops varieties, calendar of field works, fertilization, inputs and water needs, pest and disease scouting, harvesting, conditioning cones and budget of 3-hectare hop yard.

HOPS 201: LOOKING BEYOND THE HALF ACRE – POST HARVEST PROCESSING
Lecturer – Dr. Rob Sirrine Ph. D. – Michigan State University Extension
Best practices for the drying, packaging, pelletizing and storing of harvested hops

Afternoon lecturer topics
How to achieve nutrient density
Integrated pest management
Phytosanitary cultural practices for both conventional and organic applications

TECHNICAL CONVERSATION ABOUT HOPS FROM A BREWER’S PERSPECTIVE
Mark Benzaquen – Ontario Craft Brewers
Nate Ferguson – Professor at Niagara College Brewmaster Program

Fees for the day are $80 advance/$90 at the door for OHGA members, and $130 for non-members, with the price including lunch and refreshments.
