Railway City Releasing Gruit for Oxford Renaissance Festival

ST. THOMAS, ONRailway City Brewing has announced the release of a new one-off beer that has been brewed especially for next month’s Oxford Renaissance Festival.

Brewed in the style of a gruit, the ancient type of beer made using various flavouring herbs instead of hops, the yet-to-be-named beer is described as follows:

Our Gruit pours a translucent golden straw with an ample, long lasting white head. On the nose it immediately hits with strong spice and woodsy note conjuring memories of sage, cumin, mint and menthol. Followed quickly by a malty sweetness with toffee. It’s lack of hops may mean no bitterness, but certainly not in flavour, coming in with a thick and full body bringing a herbaceous and peppery blend of sage, rosemary, juniper and cumin, before finishing sweet with mango and pear.

A vote to name the gruit is being held on the Oxford Renaissance Festival Facebook page, and the beer will be available at the Festival, which takes place on June 13th to 15th in Woodstock, Ontario.

An advance taste of the gruit will be offered this Thursday May 22nd at Railway City’s Thursday Night Session event, taking place at the brewery starting at 7:00 PM. The $5 admission includes samples of the gruit and several other Railway City beers. Only 60 spots are available, and those interested in attending should email info@railwaycitybrewing.com to check on reservation availability.
