Mill Street Old Fashioned Oatmeal Stout is a 5.7% abv sweet stout that brewmaster Joel Manning describes as follows:
This classic English style stout is a throwback to the mid 1800’s when oats were first added to this style in order to make them “nourishing” and were often prescribed to nursing mothers for that reason. English and Scottish breweries often made sweeter stouts than their Irish cousins and oatmeal stouts are a lot different from the classic dry Irish stouts like our Cobblestone. Oatmeal stouts are sweeter from the additional malts used (including caramel malt) and have a very silky texture from the small quantity of oats used in the mash. Our version is slightly drier than typical of this style but we make up for it by accentuating the apparent sweetness and smoothness of the beer by Nitrogen-charging it.
Members of the Mill Street Insiders mailing list will receive an exclusive preview of Old Fashioned Oatmeal Stout tomorrow (January 24th) from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, before it goes on tap at the Brewpub and Beer Hall for general sale.
