MIDLAND, ONSimcoe.com reports that a beer inspired by the annual Ontario Butter Tart Festival in Midland will be available soon at LCBO stores throughout the region.

Maple Butter Tart Ale was the winner in a competition that was held this past summer at the Griffin Session Muskoka beer festival between beers representing different cities and towns in northern Ontario. As a result of the win, the beer will be available for a year at LCBO locations from North Bay to Barrie.

Developed at Sawdust City Brewing in Gravenhurst, the 5% abv beer is described by brewer Sam Corbeil as follows:

We took (Sawdust City Ol’ Woody Alt) and gave it a little bit more caramel base and a little bit more bready crustiness, and then we added the flavours that you find reminiscent of butter tarts. As it warms up, you’ll start to taste it like you’re biting into a butter tart, but it holds its own as a beer. It’s not overly cloying and sweet. We wanted people to enjoy it and not feel like they’ve just coated their teeth in sugar.

Griffin Maple Butter Tart Ale will be available in 473 ml cans at select LCBOs starting later this week.
