VANCOUVER, BCStrange Fellows Brewing has announced the release of a new limited edition beer, as well as the next in its Strange Days series of events inspired by superstitions and customs from around the world.

Now on tap at the brewery is Elderflower Saison, a 5.5% abv farmhouse ale with the following notes:

Many European countries celebrate Spring with various local concoctions of Elderflowers. We have joined this tradition, inspired by the fruits & flowers of the season. Capturing the essence of May, this Table Saison has an enticing floral aroma & flavour, & a light dry finish. Just as with a fresh-hopped beer, the Elderflowers were picked & added directly to the beer as soon after harvesting as possible. One afternoon in mid-May a bunch of Strange Fellows & their accomplices headed to a farm way up the Fraser Valley & spent the afternoon picking Elderflowers, then drove them straight back to the brewery where they were added to the brew kettle that same night.

This new beer has been released in advance of the brewery’s celebration of Midsummer, which has the following back story:

As the sun sets on the longest day of the year, all over the world people light bonfires to celebrate the sun’s triumph over darkness. In some places people jump over the fire to symbolically ward off the cold of the coming winter. Elsewhere, fishermen gather on the edge of the ocean to pray and make offerings to the Siren of the Seas to ensure safe passage and a bountiful catch. If the gifts are carried out to sea, she has accepted them and their giver will be blessed with good fortune.

Midsummer is being marked at the brewery tasting room from June 16th to 22nd. For more details, see the Strange Fellows Facebook page.
