Brunswick Bierworks Appoints Lodewijk Swinkels as Brewmaster and Head of Operations

TORONTO, ON – Brunswick Bierworks, a brewing facility in East Toronto dedicated to creating beers with brewery partners from Canada and around the world, has announced that a legendary brewmaster has joined its team as Brewmaster and Head of Operations.

Lodewijk Swinkels is a seventh-generation brewer who has many years of experience in the brewing industry, most recently spending 14 years as brewmaster at De Koningshoeven Brewery – makers of La Trappe beers – where he won a number of awards and established a barrel-aging program.

Brunswick Bierworks owners Mike Laba and Chris Goddard have had a relationship with De Koningshoeven and Swinkels for several years, starting with their representation of La Trappe brands in Canada via their import agency The Craft Brand Company, and Brunswick’s Senior Brewing Advisor Christian Riemerschmid von der Heide has been friends with Swinkels since they trained together at the Technical University of Munich in Weihenstephan decades ago.

“I was drawn to the passion here and to be honest, I was drawn to the beer,” said Swinkels in a statement. “To be able to brew with some of the most iconic and innovative brewers in a brand new, world-class facility is something you dream about.”
