Two Sergeants Brewing Reopening in Edmonton Delayed by Red Tape

EDMONTON, ABGlobal News reports that the relocation of Two Sergeants Brewing to Edmonton is currently in limbo due to “a bureaucratic headache that’s led to thousands of dollars in unanticipated costs.”

Two Sergeants closed its original location in Fort Saskatchewan earlier this year, and announced plans to reopen in Edmonton. But zoning issues with the brewery’s new location at 105 Avenue near 119 Street have caused a delay, as the article notes:

Last fall, the City of Edmonton created a “breweries, wineries and distilleries” zoning classification [and] rezoned large sections of the city like Old Strathcona and the Brewery District at 104 Avenue and 120 Street. But Two Sergeants falls just 17 feet north of the Brewery District — which means they are now going through the process to get the property rezoned.

In a post on Facebook, the brewery explained that before the new classification was introduced, breweries were permitted under “light industrial” zoning, and the space they leased allowed both that and a restaurant/bar. But with the new category, the city insisted Two Sergeants apply for re-zoning.

Two Sergeants founder Kevin Moore tells Global that while city staff have been helpful, rezoning will still be “a six-month process and upwards of $10,000.” The brewery is considering crowd-funding to help cover the costs, and has asked for feedback on Facebook.
