Simon Fraser University Establishes the BC Beer History Archive

BURNABY, BC – The Simon Fraser University Archives and Records Management department has announced the establishment of an archive of materials documenting the rich history of beer and brewing in British Columbia.

The BC Beer History Archive has been in the works since the autumn of 2021, and was officially announced late last month. At its core are several large donations of breweriana and documents, including the collections of the late beer historian Greg Evans (held and donated by CAMRA Victoria); Great Canadian Beer Festival co-founders John Rowling and Gerry Hieter; and What’s Brewing editor Dave Smith.

The donations are described in a What’s Brewing feature article on the Archive:

Our donation includes full and empty bottles and cans, tap handles, posters, coasters, tent cards, documents, letters, booklets, publications and various other collectibles. SFU is interested in anything of historic value in its intake, whether it’s physical or digital, and whether it’s on paper, video, audio, photography or any other format. It can even be beer recipes or spoken word stories.

The first portion of the archive to be fully arranged and described is the Greg Evans fonds, which has an online finding aid, and is in the process of being digitized. Select images have also been published on the SFU Archives and Records Management blog, as well at the end of the What’s Brewing article.

Donations to the Archive are welcome, with full details on how to donate materials available on the SFU Archives and Record Management website.
